treatment inner thumb

Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the back of your mouth and are usually the last to emerge. They typically appear during late adolescence or early adulthood, though some people may never develop them. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly missing teeth. While wisdom teeth can sometimes emerge without issues, they sometimes require removal due to complications.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth can become problematic if they are impacted, meaning they don’t have enough room to emerge properly. This can lead to:

  • Pain and Swelling: Impacted teeth can cause discomfort and inflammation in the mouth and gums.
  • Infections: Bacteria can easily be trapped around partially emerged wisdom teeth, leading to infections.
  • Damage to Other Teeth: Impacted wisdom teeth can press against adjacent molars, causing decay or damage.
  • Cysts or Tumours: Fluid-filled sacs, or cysts, may form around impacted teeth, potentially leading to bone damage.

The Removal Process

Pre-Surgery Instructions

If you are having sedation during your wisdom tooth extraction, it’s important to follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least six hours prior to surgery.
  • Arrange for transportation, as sedation may affect your ability to drive home safely.
  • Inform your dentist of any medications you are taking and any existing health conditions.

The Procedure

At Crown Bank Dental, our skilled oral surgeons use state-of-the-art technology to ensure a safe and efficient removal process:

  • Sedation Options: Depending on your comfort level, you can choose from local anaesthesia or IV sedation.
  • Extraction: Your dentist will make a small cut in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. If necessary, a drill may be used to divide the tooth into sections for easier removal or to remove a small amount of bone.
  • Post-Extraction: The site is cleaned with sterile saline and dissolvable stiches may be used to promote healing.

Post-Surgery Care

To ensure a smooth recovery, follow these post-surgery care tips:

  • Rest: Take it easy for the first few days, avoiding strenuous activities.
  • Pain Management: Use prescribed pain relief or over-the-counter options such as ibuprofen.
  • Diet: Stick to soft foods and avoid using straws, which can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Oral Hygiene: Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after 24 hours to aid healing. Avoid touching or poking the socket as this can delay healing.
  • Bleeding: It is normal to experience a small amount of bleeding after having any tooth removed. Your dentist will provide you with a gauze pack to help you apply pressure to the area in the event of any oozing.

FAQs About Wisdom Tooth Removal

When is it Necessary to Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth don’t grow like other teeth and when they become impacted, they sit in a more angular position. In many people, wisdom teeth can become stuck under the gum or only partially able to come through the gum. This can cause unpleasant symptoms like swelling, tenderness and abscesses, which can go on to affect neighbouring teeth.

At What Age Do People Develop Wisdom Teeth?

Most people will have their wisdom teeth come through in their late teens, though it’s not unusual to develop them as a pre-teen or an adult.

However, not all people have their wisdom teeth come through; some people don’t develop any wisdom teeth.

Can I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed Under Sedation?

We can offer IV sedation to patients who are feeling nervous about having their wisdom teeth removed.

Will Wisdom Tooth Removal Hurt?

The procedure is performed with local anaesthesia, so you will be numb and won’t feel pain during the extraction. Some discomfort is normal during recovery but manageable with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol. If you opt for IV sedation you will be more relaxed during the procedure.

How Long is the Recovery Time for Wisdom Tooth Removals?

Recovery typically takes one to two weeks. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days, but full healing may take longer.

Is It Necessary to Remove All Wisdom Teeth at Once?

Not always. The need to remove all wisdom teeth depends on individual circumstances, such as symptoms, impaction, or the risk of future problems. Your dentist can provide advice specific to your condition.

Can I Eat Normally After My Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery?

Post-surgery, it’s important to stick to a diet of soft foods for the first few days to avoid disturbing the surgical site. Gradually reintroduce more solid foods as your comfort level allows.

What Should I Do If Bleeding Persists After the Procedure?

Slight bleeding is normal, but if heavy bleeding continues, bite down on a clean gauze pad and apply pressure. If the bleeding doesn’t subside, contact Crown Bank Dental for assistance.

How Can I Reduce Swelling After the Surgery?

To minimise swelling, apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for the first 24 hours after surgery. Swelling usually peaks around 48 to 72 hours after surgery and gradually subsides.

Are Follow Up Appointments Necessary?

Follow-up appointments are not usually required, but the team at Crown Bank Dental always phone our patients the following day to check-in. Your dentist will inform you if a follow-up visit is needed based on your specific case.
